Bonsai Containers - Choose the Right One

    Just like plants have pots bonsai require some sort of container to hold the soil and a place to plant their roots. Today the range and variety of containers available to bonsai growers is amazing, but the wide range of choice makes it hard to know what is best for your plant. A solid base is needed for the plant as it will help to stabilize the bonsai from gusts of wind and the accidental knock by a child or pet. Due to the miniature size of bonsai they do not need deep containers and a shallow container is normally a perfect fit.

Container Guidelines

    The following tips and guidelines will come in useful when you are shopping for a container to house your bonsai trees:

• The container should try to match the style of the bonsai. For example: a very young and small bonsai should not be planted in a large container as the contrast will destroy the look of the bonsai, but it can work the other way.
• Holes on the bottom of the container are important for the purpose of drainage. Excess water that is not used by the bonsai needs to be released through the holes. If there are no holes the excess water and moisture can cause the bonsai roots to rot and eventually the bonsai will die.
• Avoid using a container that is too small because the bonsai will grow and repotting should only be done every two years on average.
• Decorations and paintings on the container can affect the impact of the bonsai. If the bonsai is small and still young then a decorated and painted container will be appropriate. If the tree is large and mature then it is recommended to rather focus attention on the tree and not a decorated container.

    Your likes and taste should be expressed by your choice of container of your bonsai. Remember to follow the above guidelines if you want to avoid the hassle of having to repot your bonsai due to using a container that is too small or not liked. Bonsai growing is an art and the container is as important as the bonsai tree.
